Angiosperms<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In our last blog, you learned the difference between angiosperms and gymnosperms<\/a>. When it comes to monocots and dicots, angiosperms are the focus. Angiosperms are often considered the dominant plant-life on the planet because there are an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 species known to man. They are any type of flowering plant whose seeds (ovules) are enclosed in an ovary (usually a fruit). Angiosperms are conventional garden plants that bloom flowers from a hidden seed usually enclosed inside a fruit, which develops from carpels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, angiosperms are the emphasis when discussing monocots\nand dicots, as all flowering plants are one or the other. These two categories\nof angiosperms primarily represent the differences in the morphology of plant stems,\nleaves, flowers, and fruits. At a closer look, the basic chief difference\nbetween the two comes down to cotyledons<\/em>.\nCotyledons are embryo seed leaves that store and distribute nutrition to the\nembryo until it can use photosynthesis make its own food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monocots<\/strong>, or monocotyledons<\/em>, have only one cotyledon. Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2766 Lilies
\u2766 Daffodils
\u2766 Grains
\u2766 Fruit Trees
\u2766 Corn
\u2766 Onions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dicots<\/strong>, or dicotyledons<\/em>, have two cotyledons. Examples common include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2766 Daisies
\u2766 Peas
\u2766 Mangoes
\u2766 Apple Trees
\u2766 Mint<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Ways to Tell the Difference:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

\u2611 Dicot leaves have branched veins. Monocot leaves are parallel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2611 Dicot flowers have petals in multiples of 4’s or 5’s. Monocots bloom petals in 3’s or 4’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
